In order for a culture and political economy of decentralization to emerge, the right infrastructure must be implemented. Ownership and organization of the means of production shape a society’s social and economic order. Centralized control of infrastructure leads to a centralized political economy. It follows that decentralization and community control of the means of production could enable humans, individually and collectively, to create a culture of freedom.
This essay traces the argument across energy, water, food, finance, and technology — examining how centralized control of each has led to exploitation, and how appropriate technology and permaculture design offer alternatives.
